Washington, D.C. – Congressman Nathaniel Moran (R-TX-01) on Thursday praised House passage of Congresswoman Ann Wagner’s (R-MO-02) Born-Alive Survivors Protection Act. Congressman Moran cosponsored this legislation to protect babies who are born alive after failed abortions.
“All life is precious, and we must never take that for granted,” said Congressman Moran.“I am proud to proclaim the eternal truth that every life comes from God and holds immeasurable value. Each gift of life is known and appointed for a purpose, and we must honor that calling by defending life at every turn. Because of this, I am always looking for ways to defend life and reduce the number of abortions in this country.”
“I was proud to co-sponsor Congresswoman Wagner’s Born-Alive Survivors Protection Act,” continued Congressman Moran. “And, this should be a straightforward issue upon which we can all agree. If a baby survives an abortion in this country, they deserve the same right to treatment as any other patient. If the life of a child can be saved, doctors should use every resource available to provide life-saving care. House Republicans remain steadfast in the fight to protect and preserve the gift of life.”
Specifically, the Born-Alive Survivors Protection Act includes:
Care for Survivors:Requires health care practitioners be present at a live birth to exercise skill, care, and diligence to preserve the life and health of the child—the same degree of care that would be offered to any other child born prematurely at the same gestational age. After providing care, health care workers must transport and admit the child to a hospital.
Mandatory Reporting:Requires health care practitioners and hospital employees to report violations to law enforcement authorities, addressing the underreporting of born-alive abortions.
Penalties for Violations: Penalizes the intentional killing of a born-alive child with fines or up to five years of imprisonment.
Support for Mothers: Provides the mother of an abortion survivor a civil cause of action against the abortionist and protection from prosecution, recognizing that women are secondary victims of abortion and affirming the dignity of motherhood.
