Congressman Moran Applauds $500,000 Grant for I-20 Passenger Rail in East Texas

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Nathaniel Moran (TX-01) commended the Federal Railroad Administration’s (FRA) announcement of a $500,000 award to the Southern Rail Commission (SRC) for the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Corridor Identification and Development (Corridor ID) Program to bring a pipeline of intercity passenger rail to Mineola, Longview, and Marshall. Congressman Moran, who has long supported DOT’s effort to expand passenger rail transportation in East Texas, applauded this grant award.

The grant was a part of the DOT’s FRA plan to expand future passenger rail across the country. This grant will work towards connecting passenger rail between Dallas, TX and Altana, GA.

“Improving East Texas’ infrastructure and connecting the First District to metropolitan areas along I-20 is an essential effort for ensuring long-term growth and prosperity,” said Congressman Moran. “This investment will help better position Mineola, Longview, and Marshall for future economic opportunities and growth. I have seen firsthand the positive effects of investing in our railroads, and I will continue to work with our local leaders to advocate for programs that better our infrastructure and strengthen our economy.”

“This is outstanding news, not only for our Longview, Tyler, Mineola, Marshall, East Texas region but also for all large cities and smaller rural communities along the I-20 Corridor route. All will greatly benefit from this much-needed East-West connection across our Southern region,” said Judge Bill Stoudt, Gregg County Judge. “We thank all who have worked with such dedication for many years to help bring this project to this important milestone, not only here in Texas, but also in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia.”

Background:

The Corridor ID Program is a comprehensive intercity passenger rail planning and development program that will help guide intercity passenger rail development throughout the country and create a pipeline of intercity passenger rail projects ready for implementation.

The long-term corridor project would connect Dallas, TX to Atlanta, GA and plans to serve the following cities in Texas: Fort Worth, Mineola, Longview, and Marshall.
