CBS 19: Rep. Nathaniel Moran asks salary to be withheld amid ongoing government shutdown

Rep. Nathaniel Moran (R-Tyler) has formally requested for his salary to be withheld while the government shutdown continues.

Moran made the announcement on a Facebook post Monday, saying "I have been informed that, despite the lapse in appropriations and the ongoing government shutdown, Members of Congress will continue to receive their salary."

"Please withhold my net pay until an appropriations agreement has taken effect," Moran said.

Amid the ongoing shutdown, the U.S Department of Agriculture posted a notice saying federal food aid will not be dispersed on Nov. 1 through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP. The Senate on Thursday also rejected dueling partisan bills to pay federal workers during the government shutdown, with both Republicans and Democrats deflecting blame as many employees are set to miss their first full paycheck at the end of this week.

"Government shutdowns are costly and unproductive, and it is simply not right for Members of Congress to continue receiving paychecks while thousands of federal employees go without," Moran said. "Public service demands shared responsibility, and I believe Members should not be exempt from the consequences of congressional inaction."

The government shutdown entered day 27 on Monday, making it the second=longest federal funding lapse in U.S history, preceded by the 35-day shutdown during the first Trump administration from Dec. 22, 2018 to Jan. 25, 2019.

The back and forth on day 27 of the government shutdown comes as the two parties are at a protracted impasse with no signs of either side giving in. Democrats say they won’t vote to reopen the government until Republicans negotiate with them on extending expiring subsidies under the Affordable Care Act.
