Congressman Moran Joins Chairman Jordan, Judiciary Committee on Hearing on Violent Crime in Manhattan

NEW YORK, NY –  Congressman Nathaniel Moran (TX-01) released the following statement today after joining Chairman Jim Jordan and members of the House Judiciary Committee for a field hearing in New York City where the Committee examined the increase in violent crimes under the leadership of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg:

“New Yorkers have been abandoned by city leadership, namely, District Attorney Alvin Bragg who has neglected to uphold the Oath of Office he solemnly swore by failing to ‘ discharge the duties and responsibilities of the office of the New York County District Attorney. ’ Rather than honor his responsibilities as the top prosecutor in New York, DA Bragg has utilized his office to pursue a political agenda that in no way, shape, or form protects the citizens he was elected to represent and protect.

“As a member of Congress, I am proud to stand alongside my colleagues to amplify the voices of the victims of violent crime, who the city of New York appears to have forgotten. The people of New York have been abandoned, without support from the court system or their elected officials who are busy pursuing political agendas. Adding to the uptick in crime, city officials have decided to let all manner of criminals back onto the street – including violent gang members who recruit and groom teenagers to carry out “smash-and-grab” mass thefts and even more appalling crimes on their behalf. These criminals, and their young accomplices, recognize that under DA Bragg, there will be little to no punishment for their actions. This new form of “New York Justice” has dangerously created a real-life  ‘get out of jail free’  card for criminals.

“Those who commit violent crimes need to be held accountable for their actions – being properly charged and persecuted, and those who have sworn an oath need to put their community, and its safety, before any political agenda. Unfortunately, as we saw during today’s hearing, neither of these standards are upheld in New York. I will continue to fight for accountability in our justice system – for both those who commit crimes, and those who are tasked with delivering justice.”
