Dear East Texas, In November, the American people made their voices heard, electing President Trump and a Republican majority in Congress with a clear mandate: lower taxes, reduce the national debt, and rein in wasteful spending. On Tuesday, the House took a crucial step toward delivering on those promises by passing a budget resolution. This vote sets the stage for a substantive debate on key savings and reforms, paving the way to extend the Trump tax cuts, secure our border, and unleash American energy—all while rooting out waste, fraud, and abuse in Washington. I look forward to working with President Trump to pass a meaningful reconciliation package that will allow individuals in the First District to keep more of their hard-earned money. Spring is just around the corner. As the cold fades and bluebonnets start to bloom, it’s time for some much-needed spring cleaning. In Washington, D.C., the Trump Administration is tackling a different kind of cleanup—rooting out fraud, abuse, and wasteful government spending. Just like cleaning out the garage, the Administration is pulling everything out, sorting through the mess, and deciding what’s essential and what needs to go. This means taking a hard look at government spending and getting rid of what doesn’t serve the American people. For too long, the federal government has taken advantage of the American taxpayer. With our national debt soaring to $36 trillion as of November 2024, the American people delivered a clear mandate to the Trump Administration. Our country thrives when we serve the interests of the American people—by increasing liberty and promoting prosperity—not by expanding reckless spending programs that abuse taxpayer funds and drive up our national deficit. America is on a path toward restoration. I support the Trump Administration’s efforts to rein in government waste and applaud its success in saving more than $55 billion so far. Here are just a few of the wasteful expenditures uncovered by DOGE and canceled by the Trump Administration in the past few weeks: Prior to this oversight, Washington bureaucrats were spending your hard-earned money with little transparency and no regard for the American people’s interests. That money was being wasted on everyone except the people it was meant to serve. I encourage you to visit the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) website to see how your tax dollars were being spent and what the Trump Administration is doing to ensure transparency and efficiency in government. These findings serve as a recommendation for cuts and revelation of waste, fraud and abuse. At the end of the day, each individual agency reviews DOGE’s findings and guidance, then uses that information to decide what the next step should be for the program in question. There is a lot of misinformation out there, so don’t be confused. DOGE has no authority to unilaterally decide the fate of these programs. DOGE remains laser-focused on identifying the waste, fraud and abuse, and flagging it for the respective agencies and the President. They are fulfilling this mission with transparency and expediency.

Slavery in any form is morally repugnant, and America must not be complicit in the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) genocide and oppression. As a member of the China Select Committee which focuses on threats from the CCP, I was proud to reintroduce my No Dollars to Uyghur Forced Labor Act, prohibiting U.S. contracts with companies tied to forced labor in Xinjiang. The bill passed the House last Congress, but the Democrat-led Senate failed to take it up. This critical legislation would prohibit the State Department from developing or designing international contracts with companies that import or source any raw materials or goods that were manufactured, produced, or mined from the Xinjiang region of China.
|
My legislation would also require a report to Congress identifying all violations in the previous year with a plan to improve enforcement and compliance. Xinjiang is central to China’s economy, yet behind its industries lies a horrifying reality—mass detention, forced labor, and brutal oppression. The United States cannot turn a blind eye. We must act decisively against companies complicit in these abuses and take a firm stand against totalitarian regimes. If we allow China’s influence to grow unchecked, the atrocities happening to the Uyghurs today will spread wherever the CCP extends its reach. America must lead with strength and refuse to be complicit in this cruelty.

Federal overreach stifles family-owned and small businesses—and it's time to fight back. Congressman Finstad (R-MN-01), Congresswoman Hageman (WY-At-Large), and I reintroduced the Prove It Act to empower small businesses to challenge excessive federal regulations that hinder economic growth.
The Prove It Act strengthens protections under the Regulatory Flexibility Act by mandating that federal agencies assess both the direct and indirect costs imposed by their regulations. It ensures that the impact on small entities is thoroughly evaluated and mitigated, giving business owners a clear path to contest regulations that fail to account for their unique challenges. Under this law, if agencies neglect this responsibility, small businesses can request a review by a chief government advocate—and if regulators fall short, those regulations are nullified for small entities. This bill will ensure that family-owned and small businesses have a powerful voice in shaping policies that affect their survival and growth.
The legislation passed the House with a vote of 208-196 in the 118th Congress, but Senate Democrats did not bring it to a vote for consideration.

Last week, I spoke with members of the North East Texas Bankers Association about the legislative priorities of House Republicans and how we are working toward a budget resolution to unlock the process for President Trump’s legislative agenda through reconciliation.

Afterward, I met with Kellie Barker and the incredible students at Ignite Youth, an afterschool program in Mt. Pleasant making a real difference in the lives of these students. I had a great time answering the kids' questions—thanks for having me and thanks for all your doing!

On February 23rd, 1836, during the Texas War for Independence, Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna began his siege of the Alamo. Over the next 13 days, the defenders held out against overwhelming odds before the fort ultimately fell. Though a defeat, the battle became a powerful symbol of heroic resistance and the fight for Texas' independence.
