Dear East Texas,

One of my top priorities in Washington is ensuring East Texas families can afford to live, work, and build a future in our community. House Republicans are working hard to drive costs down, and this week I heard directly from people on the front lines of that effort. The Lumbermen's Association of Texas (LAT) represents the building materials supply chain that keeps Texas' housing and construction markets running, and their perspective was invaluable.

One of the greatest issues facing Americans today is ensuring we have affordable housing. I was proud to support the Housing for the 21st Century Act, which passed the House with overwhelming bipartisan support. The legislation tackles the housing shortage head-on by removing unnecessary regulatory barriers to streamline permitting and home construction, modernize HUD programs, and update outdated banking regulations. This legislation has a simple goal: provide real solutions that empower homeowners and renters, strengthen communities, and allow more affordable choices for all Americans.

Continuing President Reagan’s Vision—And Reigning in the WTO

President Ronald Reagan made free and fair trade a cornerstone of his presidency. In his 1985 State of the Union address, he called for a new multilateral negotiations platform to advance meaningful progress in global trade relations—one that would combat unfair and distortive practices while preserving strong, open economic markets worldwide. That vision is still relevant today—but the World Trade Organization (WTO) is falling short.

Today, under President Trump's leadership, it is time to realign our trade posture in a way that upholds those same principles. China has learned to use the WTO’s own rules against us, exploiting loopholes while undermining fair competition. Other member nations have followed that same playbook and the WTO’s own processes have done little to stop it. That must change. America must lead the charge on meaningful WTO reform—resetting the trade landscape so our workers, businesses, and economy emerge stronger than ever, just as President Reagan envisioned.

How China is Cornering the Market on our Meds

The United States has historically led the world in medical innovation, and that leadership did not happen by accident. We invested in research, technology, and supply chain security. But now, China is the dominant—or, in some instances, sole—producer of key active pharmaceutical ingredients for many essential medicines. In 2014, China conducted just over 1,800 clinical trials, while the United States led the world with over 7,200 clinical trials. Less than a decade later, in 2023, China expanded to over 11,000 clinical trials, surpassing the 7,500 trials conducted in the United States that year.

At the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party hearing this week, I questioned witnesses on the steps we need to take to ensure American dominance in pharmaceutical technologies and developments. Innovation is our greatest strength, and I stressed the need to build upon an environment that values scientific inquiry, protects intellectual property, and respects the life of every patient. In the U.S., there must be no shortage of willingness to innovate, lead, and compete with our greatest adversary—China. We must ensure that the U.S. remains the leader in producing new innovative drugs that save lives and not China.
