Happy Independence Day! Every July 4th, it is vital we reflect on the strides we have taken as a country. July 4th commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776 to mark when the 13 American colonies declared independence from Great Britain.


The Declaration outlines the core principles America was founded on. This includes the belief “that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”


Reflecting on the founding of our country, we can look at the 365 days between July 4, 1775, and July 4, 1776. They became the most defining in human history. In that single year, brave men and women stood their ground, wrestled with the weight of liberty, and lit the spark that would give birth to the greatest nation the world has ever known—the United States of America.

One, Big, Beautiful Win for Working Families

 


This week, the House passed the final version of the One, Big, Beautiful Bill, and sent it to President Trump’s desk for his signature—delivering one of the biggest wins for working families and small businesses in a generation.


This bill isn’t about Washington. It’s about the welder, the teacher, the small business owner, farmer and rancher, and every East Texan working hard to build a better life. It lowers taxes—empowering families and reigniting the engines of American industry, all without punishing grit and hard work.


Before the vote, Speaker Mike Johnson delivered a powerful speech that reminded us what makes America truly exceptional:“We live in the most free, the most powerful, the most benevolent nation that has ever been on the face of the Earth, and there’s a reason for that.”

Our rights come from God, not government. And as we celebrate Independence Day, we are grateful for Speaker Johnson’s bold leadership, and for helping deliver the One Big Beautiful Bill to President Trump’s desk. It renews the promise of freedom and prosperity for working families across this nation.

This bill delivers:

  • Tax relief on tipped and overtime income

  • Direct tax relief for families, seniors, and farmers through the enhanced Child Tax Credit, a new deduction for Social Security income tax, and a boosted and permanent Death Tax exemption

  • Permanent relief for small businesses and job creators through the 199A Small Business Deduction and full and immediate expensing for R&D and everyday business expenses

  • Major investments in rural growth and American manufacturing with the prioritization of rural areas in the Opportunity Zone program and a new way for businesses to expense investments in new qualified property

The work is never done—and this is a major step in the right direction.

Why American Leadership Abroad Matters to East Texas

 

On Monday, I joined the U.S. Global Leadership Coalition in Texarkana to talk about something that doesn’t always make headlines but affects every family and business in East Texas: American leadership on the world stage.

When America leads with moral clarity: defending life, religious freedom, and the rule of law—we don’t just protect our values here at home—we strengthen them abroad. That has a direct impact on our national security and our domestic economy.

Right now, the Chinese Communist Party is building influence around the globe—not through force, but through economic influence using control of infrastructure, minerals, patents, and supply chains worldwide as prime avenues of influence. On top of that, they are building their military, engaging in cybersecurity attacks against the west, and seeking to beat America in the critical race for the development of Artificial Intelligence.

We can’t afford to sit back and let that happen.

That’s why I’m focused on stopping CCP influence where it takes root, investing in American innovation and industry, and leading with strength and values, not fear. East Texans know how to stand their ground. It’s time we do that globally, too.

This week, I had the chance to meet with Bart Spivey, the new Executive Director of the Northeast Texas Workforce Board, along with several of his board members. Their team serves nine counties across the region—seven of which are in the First District of Texas.

I’m grateful for the hardworking folks at Workforce Solutions Northeast Texas. They’re doing the real, boots-on-the-ground work of connecting local businesses with the talent they need, and helping East Texans find the skills training needed to meet the demands of a changing economy.
