Dear East Texas,
This week in Washington, both of my committee assignments zeroed in on the same threat: China. As a member of the Ways and Means Committee and the Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), I participated in hearings that exposed the CCP’s lust for power—not just around the world, but right here in America. At the Ways and Means Committee hearing, we examined how foreign adversaries are infiltrating U.S. non-profits to gain influence. At the China Select Committee hearing, we tracked how Beijing weaponizes every tool at its disposal to weaken Taiwan’s resolve, undermine its political institutions, and shape the information environment.

Unmasking Threats from Beijing and Beyond
|
At the Ways and Means Committee, I examined how tax-exempt organizations should only serve as a philanthropic foundation in our communities, but instead, foreign interference has driven radical changes in America. This hurts the credibility of nonprofits that truly seek to promote the wellbeing of our communities, and ultimately damages the fabric of our society, especially if foreign adversaries are involved.
The evidence is undeniable and disturbing: A British billionaire funneled over $500 million into U.S. advocacy groups while operating out of Beijing, bankrolling CCP-connected organizations, and maintaining close ties with the Chinese government. Similarly, the Singham Network has funneled at least $20 million through groups like the People’s Forum to amplify anti-American and pro-CCP narratives. I made it clear: this committee will ensure our tax-exempt organizations can’t be weaponized against American interests.

The CCP’s Gaslighting and Manipulation to Marginalize Taiwan
|
The CCP uses lies, lawfare, and leverage to suppress their people and undermine democracy. The CCP strategically uses non-military tools to coerce Taiwan, including economic retaliation against trading partners, coordinated propaganda and disinformation campaigns, diplomatic pressure, and targeted coercion of multinational corporations that refuse to conform to its political demands.
The CCP is deliberate, targeted, and deceptive. The United States must expose these strategies used against our ally, Taiwan, so we can ensure that American companies, non-profit organizations, and governmental institutions do not propagate the lies of the CCP.

Taking Action Against Chinese Influence and Control
|
This week, I introduced legislation to ensure foreign adversaries cannot benefit from incentives in the U.S. tax code. Today, companies may still qualify for provisions like bonus depreciation, immediate R&D expensing, research tax credits, and interest deductibility—even while relying on technology tied to Foreign Entities of Concern (FEOC) such as China, Russia, North Korea, and Iran. My approach is intentionally broad. Rather than targeting a single company or platform, this bill establishes a clear, consistent policy: American tax benefits should never be used in ways that could undermine our economic security or national security interests. The legislation is designed to bring transparency to corporate dependencies on adversary-controlled technology and encourage a shift away from those relationships. Greater visibility will drive better decision-making, strengthen supply chains, and help safeguard sensitive data connected to Americans and critical infrastructure. Committees across Congress are increasingly confronting the influence of the Chinese Communist Party and other adversaries. This bill is part of that larger effort—making clear that the United States will not allow its own tax laws to be used in ways that disadvantage American businesses or expose strategic vulnerabilities.

Restoring Common Sense in Our Elections
|
This week, the House passed the SAVE America Act, by a vote of 218-213, to ensure American elections are decided by American citizens. This legislation amends the National Voter Registration Act of 1993 to require proof of United States citizenship to register an individual to vote in elections for Federal office. It also requires individuals to provide photo identification before voting—which is supported by over 80% of Americans. These are common sense reforms to ensure integrity in our elections. As I’ve said a number of times as a County Judge in Texas, what we need are SALTY elections—Secure, Accurate, Legal, Transparent elections with ‘You,’ the American citizen involved in every step of the way.

I was honored to receive the Family Research Council Action’s One Hundred Percent Award. The annual award recognizes the members of Congress who displayed unwavering commitment to and support of faith, family, and freedom. I have always led with these principles and continue to represent East Texas with these values. I am proud to support pro-life policies, uphold religious liberty, and champion marriage and family as the foundation of our civilization.

On February 9, 1825, the U.S. House of Representatives elected John Quincy Adams as the sixth president after no candidate secured a majority of the 261 electoral votes in the 1824 election. When no candidate had the required 131 votes, the Twelfth Amendment forced the House to choose from the top three candidates (Jackson, Adams, and Crawford).
