Dear East Texas,

Tax Season is already underway! Republicans have worked with President Trump to make filing taxes easier than ever before. By permanently doubling the Standard Deduction in the Working Families Tax Cuts as well as the Department of Treasury eliminating the unnecessary, duplicative (and very expensive) Direct File Program—Americans are experiencing the most simplified tax code and tax filing process in a generation. These efforts in Washington will allow you more time, money, and flexibility to invest in your families and your communities.

Thanks to House Republicans, your family will pay no taxes on the first $31,500 of your income in 2025. Locking in the boosted Standard Deduction saves Americans 210 million hours per year in paperwork and $13 billion in compliance costs. On top of this, we suspended the Direct File program (which had internal IRS employees preparing tax returns for certain low-income taxpayers, but at an average cost of over $1,000 per return to other taxpayers). The IRS should never be the preparer and filer of your taxes, and certainly not when numerous free services exist for these same basic tax returns for low-income taxpayers outside of the government. East Texans will see historic refunds and simplified systems—providing greater liberty to your time and money.

Supporting Our Men and Women in Blue

This week I had the privilege of meeting with the Texas Municipal Police Association (TMPA) to discuss critical issues facing our law enforcement community. Our police officers put themselves on the line every single day to keep our communities safe. I continue to champion the Fraternal Order of Police and fight for policies that give our officers the tools, training, and support they need to do their jobs effectively. I want to thank the TMPA, the Fraternal Order of Police, and all of our law enforcement officers for their service and sacrifice. Your dedication and sacrifice doesn’t go unnoticed.

Texas Rural Water Association

This week, I was able to talk to folks from the Texas Rural Water Association (TRWA) to discuss their vital work in assisting our rural communities in East Texas. These dedicated professionals work to ensure Texans in rural areas have access to clean, safe water—a fundamental need. Our rural communities need the tools and support to prosper. TRWA works tirelessly to support rural utilities, infrastructure, and technical assistance. Grateful for their dedicated leadership and service to our communities.

National Prayer Breakfast

I had the honor of attending the 2026 National Prayer Breakfast, joining colleagues in a moment of fellowship and reflection. Gatherings like this remind us of the values and faith so many of us share. This tradition has brought together leaders from all backgrounds to pray for our nation, our communities, and each other.

These moments of connection and common purpose are what help us remember why we’re here—and who we’re here to serve.

Protecting Our Communities

A few weeks ago, I had an impactful meeting with Ammon Blair from Texas Public Policy Foundation to discuss immigration and border policy. Under the Biden Administration, the consequences of reckless border policy reached every corner of our country, turning every state into a border state. President Trump took immediate and decisive action to restore security at our border, to protect communities, and restore the rule of law.

Equally important to our national security is the integrity of our electoral system. The SAVE Act, legislation requiring proof of citizenship to vote in our elections, represents a common sense safeguard for our democracy. Ensuring our elections are protected is a core principle that deserves broad support. That is why I am a proud original cosponsor of the H.R. 22, the SAVE Act, and supported its passage on the floor of the House of Representatives. I am committed to advancing policies that secure our borders, protect our communities, and preserve the integrity of our elections.

Securing America’s Dominance in Critical Minerals

This week, the House codified President Trump’s Executive Order to prioritize and streamline critical mineral development on federal lands. We cannot secure our national or economic future while being held hostage by the Chinese Communist Party. The bill cuts red tape by ordering the Department of Interior to rescind agency actions that have historically hindered domestic mining.

For too long, the CCP has dominated the global supply chain for critical minerals—this reliance on China is not just an economic vulnerability, but a national security threat. Back in November I discussed how the CCP is dangerously controlling much of the critical mineral supply chain. East Texas contains North America’s highest quality lithium brine deposits—a mineral critical for the defense of our nation. We can play an important part in standing up to China, while safeguarding property owners’ rights and our natural environment.

This Week in American History

GW

On February 4, 1789, George Washington was unanimously elected as the first president of the United States, receiving 69 electoral votes—one from each elector. He remains the only U.S. president to achieve a unanimous victory in the Electoral College, a feat he repeated in 1792.
