Dear East Texas,

Americans were finally able to keep more of their money on April 15th. We cut through Washington's red tape and delivered real, lasting relief for hardworking families. Millions of Americans are seeing historic refunds, giving them and their families greater hope for their financial futures.

East Texans work too hard to hand over more of their hard-earned dollars to Washington every April. As a member of the Ways and Means Committee, I was privileged to help lead the effort to return more of Americans’ money back to them and their families, where it belongs.

By lowering taxes and rolling back burdensome regulations, we are restoring opportunities for families, farmers, and small businesses to grow, invest, and plan for the future with confidence. East Texans now have greater freedom to keep what they earn, support their families, and bolster their local economies.

Protecting America’s Foster Care Children

This week, the First Lady joined a Ways and Means roundtable to discuss various solutions to current challenges that impact foster care individuals. With strong legislation, together we can protect and empower America’s children.

Earlier this year, Congresswoman Chu and I introduced the Foster Youth Postsecondary Education Access and Success Act to expand and modernize the Education and Training Voucher (ETV) program under the John H. Chafee Foster Care Program for Successful Transition to Adulthood (“Chafee program”). During the roundtable, I had the opportunity to discuss with the First Lady how this critical legislation would help provide a college education to foster youth by increasing the maximum voucher amount from $5,000 to $12,000, without increasing the overall spending allocated to the program.

This bill also requires states to make outreach efforts on ETVs which aligns with Mrs. Trump’s Fostering the Future Executive Order which calls for the creation of an “online platform” to help youth access the programs they are eligible for.

It is critical that we modernize the Chafee program to ensure that states are able to access funds to help address the needs of foster youth.

Cutting Red Tape to Allow American Growth

House Republicans passed legislation aimed at rolling back burdensome federal regulations that have slowed projects, punished manufacturers, and penalized states for proactively protecting their communities.

H.R. 6409 – FENCES Act. The FENCES Act addresses how states are treated under federal air quality rules when pollution originates from outside their borders—including emissions from other countries and foreign wildfires. Under current rules, states can face permitting penalties for air quality violations caused by sources they do not control. The bill would allow states to identify and account for foreign-sourced emissions earlier in the permitting process, reducing compliance burdens on manufacturers and potentially speeding up project approvals.

Strengthening American Infrastructure

Great to meet with Matthew Wagner, Vice President and General Counsel of Prysmian, to discuss how we can continue strengthening America’s infrastructure and energy future. In Marshall, Prysmian employs over 400 hardworking East Texans who help power our economy and connect our communities. Their work is critical to expand access to high-speed internet for families, schools, and small businesses.

On April 14, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln was shot and mortally wounded by John Wilkes Booth during a performance of the play “Our American Cousin” at Ford’s Theatre in Washington. Lincoln was taken to a boarding house across the street and died the following morning.
