Dear East Texas,
This week I had the incredible honor of welcoming to D.C. the 21st annual Brookshire Grocery Company Heroes Flight. Veterans in attendance included: Korean War, Vietnam War, Gulf War, and the Wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. They travelled to Washington, D.C., from East Texas and Oklahoma. In addition to the Capitol, the veterans also saw the Korean and Vietnam War memorials located on the National Mall. This is a remarkable experience for them and a small way we can say thank you for your service. My staff and I cherish welcoming them every year to our nation’s Capital.

It is always special to give them a tour of the U.S. Capitol and share all its intricate history with them. These men and women have helped shape our nation's history. Their bravery and sacrifices preserve the liberty and freedoms we get to enjoy each and every day. It is humbling to hear their stories and what America means to them. America was built on strong ideals that all of these veterans live out each day. May God Bless the brave men and women of our country.

Lindale Chamber Elected Officials Luncheon
|
It was a pleasure to recently join several of our local leaders at the Lindale Chamber Elected Officials Luncheon. I had the opportunity to share a brief legislative update and hear from other leaders who are working hard every day to serve our communities.
It’s always a privilege to be back home and connect with all the folks who we represent. These conversations serve as a reminder of why we do this work and who we’re doing it for. Together, we’re keeping East Texas strong.

United Way Non-Profit Roundtable
|
I had the opportunity to visit with leaders from United Way and many of their associated organizations to get information on how each organization is doing and to discuss the current state of legislation or executive action in Washington, D.C. that may have some impact on them. These organizations are doing vital work providing critical services, filling gaps, and lifting up families across our communities.
Our communities are stronger when we partner together. I’m grateful for the tireless efforts of those working on the front lines of health and human services.

Independent Pharmacies Are Critical to East Texas
|
Independent pharmacies are a vital source of healthcare for many rural communities, providing personalized care and essential medications. And, this is exactly what Louis Morgan No. 4 is doing, right here in Longview, Texas. I appreciate the recent opportunity to visit with them about challenges facing independent pharmacists, and what policy changes are needed to support their ability to provide pharmaceutical services for their clients.
For over 75 years, the staff has stayed dedicated to providing customers with quality service and ensuring each individual's needs are met. Louis Morgan No. 4 knows our community, understands our needs, and continues to serve East Texans daily to ensure they have access to necessary pharmaceuticals and so much more. Thank you for your steadfast commitment to Longview and East Texas.

Longview Regional Hospital Meeting
|
Last week, I met with the new Longview Regional Medical Center and the CEO, Patrick Swindle, and members of his staff. Longview Regional Medical Center plays a key role alongside our other health care institutions in providing access to high quality health care in East Texas. Healthcare is personal, and Longview Regional is providing that personalized, neighborly care every day throughout East Texas. We discussed a myriad of health care legislative policies at the federal level, and the many challenges that come with rural health, in particular.
The One, Big, Beautiful Bill created a $50 billion Rural Health Transformation program to invest in rural communities and healthcare. This will help attract and maintain high-skilled health care professionals as well as assist in acquiring innovative technology that will provide efficient care delivery and digital resources for rural facilities. This investment in our rural communities will strengthen the American healthcare system.

The power of prayer and faith in our communities must not be overlooked. Every year, on the fourth Wednesday in September, students around the world gather before the school day starts at the flagpole. See You at the Pole is a movement that spans from elementary schools to college and universities.
The tradition started in Texas. In 1990, youth ministers challenged students to launch their school year by praying. Everyone involved wanted to help students find each other and come together in community. They noted every school has a flagpole. And the tradition started.
I was honored to see East Texas youth at the pole in Marshall for “Saw You at the Pole” in the evening this year and to pray together for them, our community and our country. I hope each one of you is enjoying the school year and taking with you the theme of this year: AWE. “Lord, I am filled with awe!” Habakkuk 3:2.

On October 22, 1968, Apollo 7 returned safely from Earth's orbit, splashing down in the Atlantic Ocean. Apollo 7 was the first crewed Apollo mission lasting nearly 11 days. The mission tested the command and service modules and processes the spacecraft was ready for lunar missions.
