East Texas is Leading the Way in Cyber and IT

I was proud recently to join Provalus, a U.S. based outsourcing company, at its official ribbon cutting ceremony for its newest location in Henderson, Texas. Their name says so much—“Providing Value to the U.S.”—Provalus. Indeed, the hundreds of cybersecurity and technology experts trained locally to work locally are doing just that for companies with a national and multinational presence.

Provalus2

Provalus provides technology and support services by hiring and developing talent specifically from rural American communities like Henderson, many of whom come without prior technology experience. It then equips and trains them with career skills that suited for the new technological age. Provalus is assisting rural economies and creating long-term career paths in technology. And their mission is to “Reclaim the American Dream for our children, our families, our communities.” What a great fit for East Texas, and for the values we represent.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is Advancing, and We Must Guide It

Artificial Intelligence is on the rise, and it’s hitting every aspect of our lives, including Automated Research and Development. I wrote an op-ed in The Hill to explain the necessary actions Congress must take to properly regulate the tool. When used correctly and regulated, AI can enhance our lives, but there is a dark side to this rapid-evolving technology.

Artificial intelligence has the ability to evolve and adapt on its own. It can learn from its mistakes, train other models, and provide complex answers in a matter of seconds. The United States must get ahead of the Chinese Communist Party and become leaders in the ethical and responsible use of AI.

Northeast Texas Rural Water Conference

Small rural water systems often have limited resources for staff due to lack of skilled labor and an aging workforce. But, TRWA is taking steps to ensure East Texas has a strong workforce through efforts like new apprenticeship programs that will further develop the water industry. TRWA members are strong leaders among our East Texas rural communities, and it is an honor to represent them and stand firm with them in defense of rural water issues.

Last year, during a policy meeting with the statewide Texas Rural Water Association (TRWA), I offered to host a regional rural water conference for members of the association who provide water in rural areas throughout northeast Texas. This past week, we brought that idea to reality by hosting the first TRWA Utility Symposium in East Texas.

Rural water and wastewater utilities are vital to East Texans for so many reasons—and they have become a hot topic this year in the legislature. So, we were pleased to partner with TRWA to bring so many providers together to give them a federal legislative update, a state legislative update, and so much more information in a setting where we could build relationships and answer questions of TRWA members. Thanks to State Representatives Gary Van Deaver, Daniel Alders, and Cody Harris for their participation and their strong leadership in protecting rural water. And, thanks to the TRWA for making this conference happen and all those who came who are in the trenches everyday delivering this water.

Longview 20/20

It was an honor to speak at Longview’s 20/20 Economic Forum and keep everyone up to date on the happenings of Washington. Take a look at the wins for East Texans I discussed with them:

  • The Working Families Tax Cut is providing historic relief to East Texas businesses, workers, and families. East Texans will see tax relief on overtime and tips; strong GDP growth; savings from removing government waste, fraud, and abuse; and investment in the military and border security.
  • I recently introduced the TRUST Act to address the national debt to project economic growth and local business. This will help end Washington from writing a blank check and restore fiscal responsibility.
  • The House Ways & Means Committee passed my Tax Court Improvement Act to save businesses time and money when challenging the IRS in the Tax Court. This ensures efficient access to justice.
  • House Republicans continue to champion strong borders. The Stop Illegal Entry Act passed the House of Representatives in September. It will establish a mandatory minimum prison term of five years with penalties of up to life in prison for individuals who illegally enter or attempt to illegally enter the United States.

All these wins allow East Texas to thrive economically and lead the way in common sense policies.

This Week in American History

WashingtonCornerstone

On October 13, 1792 President George Washington laid the cornerstone of the executive mansion, later known as the White House. Although Washington chose the site and oversaw early construction, he never lived in the house. President John Adams was the first President to live in the White House.
