Legislative Updates Across East Texas

August affords me the opportunity to connect with several organizations across TX-01 to share legislative updates on our work in Washington—from delivering real tax relief for working families, to securing our border, to expanding opportunities for the next generation. Thank you to the Atlanta Lions Club, Marshall Lions Club, and Tyler Rotary Club for welcoming me to speak on these important updates from Washington. These conversations are always a highlight, and I’m grateful for the chance to hear directly from the folks we serve. 

Through these conversations, I reinforced how the Working Families Tax Cuts are putting real money back into East Texans’ pockets, discussed our continued push to secure the border and support our ICE and CBP agents, talked through our efforts to grow apprenticeship opportunities for local employers and expand support for young people pursuing education, and gave a broader update on where things stand on AI policy and the priorities shaping our agenda this session.

This August District Work Period is also a great time to get outside and enjoy a little baseball. As the best second-string First Baseman on the Republican Congressional Baseball Team (please catch the humor in that statement!), I so enjoyed donning my Congressional baseball jersey and throwing out the first pitch at the Tyler Knockouts playoff game to catcher Weston Johnston.

Thank you to everyone who is braving the Texas heat to cheer on their team—there’s nothing quite like seeing communities come together to celebrate local sports.  They matter so much by bringing neighbors together, building hometown pride, and creating memories that last well beyond the final inning. 

Right to the Point: Republicans Take Action on the Border 

I recently joined Rep. Knott on the Republican Study Committee’s “Right to the Point” podcast for a candid conversation about border security —where we’ve been, where we are now, and the parallels playing out on the world stage.

We looked back at December 2023, when the border saw over 250,000 encounters in a single month—the highest number ever recorded in U.S. history. Today, thanks to real enforcement of the laws already on the books, border crossings, human smuggling, and drug trafficking have dropped to some of the lowest levels our nation has seen in years.

We also discussed how the crisis at Ceuta (Spain) shows these challenges aren’t unique to America—but that strong leadership and a genuine commitment to enforcement make all the difference, no matter where you are in the world.

Three Headlines Tell the Same Story

Three headlines this month tell the same story about where American businesses want to be, and that is right here in Texas.

ExxonMobil's move from New Jersey to Texas became effective July 1, with the newly formed ExxonMobil Holdings Corporation headquartered in Spring. Samsung Electronics America is relocating its U.S. headquarters from Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, to its existing Plano campus by the end of the year, building on 30 years in the state. And Bristol Myers Squibb just selected Houston's Generation Park for a $2.3 billion drug manufacturing campus, expected to bring nearly 500 skilled jobs and roughly 2,000 construction and indirect jobs from 2027 through 2030.

A global energy company chose to be headquartered here. A global tech company chose to move its headquarters here. A global pharmaceutical company chose to build here. Low taxes, reasonable regulation, and a workforce that shows up. That's the environment Congressional Republicans and President Trump have worked to protect. The Working Families Tax Cuts prevented the largest tax increase in American history and locked in pro-growth provisions like bonus depreciation and small business expensing that make it worth building and hiring in this country. Good federal tax policy and a strong state business climate work together. You need both.

As a member of the Ways and Means Committee, I don't take this for granted. Jobs don't move to Texas by accident. They move because Texas and Republican policies are getting the business fundamentals right.

American golfer Jack Nicklaus won the Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) championship for his 14th major title, surpassing Bobby Jones’ record of 13 major championships. The “Golden Bear” went on to win 18 major tournaments, a record that still stands today.
