Dear East Texas,
It was an honor to join Texarkana ISD's and Tyler ISD’s Convocations this year to help kick off the new school year. I can feel the excitement and commitment that the faculty and staff are bringing to our students all across the First District of Texas, and this year is no exception.
I had the privilege of speaking to so many incredible educators and staff who show up every day for our kids, and I want to thank each of them—and all who are involved in educating the new generation of great leaders—for the dedication they bring to the classroom.
For 250 years, the dedication and commitment of our nation’s teachers have made an invaluable contribution to the development and success of our Republic. They are the dream makers for our young day dreamers! I'm confident this is going to be a fantastic year for students, teachers, and families alike. Good luck to all as you roll into the 2026-2027 school year. |
Working Families Tax Cuts: Expanded 529 Education Savings Accounts |
Speaking of education… The Working Families Tax Cuts provided more flexibility for 529 accounts. Families can now use 529 funds for a far broader range of K-12 expenses, including curriculum and instructional materials, tutoring, standardized testing fees, and dual enrollment costs—with the annual withdrawal cap doubling to $20,000 per student starting in 2026. The funds now also apply to registered apprenticeships, trade schools, and non-degree credential programs. That's real relief for parents who are homeschooling, supplementing their child's education, or choosing a school that fits their family's values. |

New Health Clinic Opens in Jefferson |
CORE Health Systems, a new primary care and psychiatry clinic, is now open in Jefferson, and I was excited to take a tour of the new facility, which offers primary care, physicals, chronic disease management, and psychiatric services for children, adolescents, and adults |
The clinic is the product of a strong community partnership between Community Healthcore, the Marion County Health & Resource Coalition, Jefferson ISD, the University of Texas at Tyler School of Medicine, and the Marion County Hospital District, with UT Tyler providing valuable medical expertise and support. Access to healthcare shouldn't require a long drive, and CORE Health Systems is a meaningful step toward ensuring Marion County residents can get quality care close to home. Thank you to everyone who helped bring this vision to life — I look forward to seeing the impact of this clinic on our community. |
Meeting the Team Behind East Texas Healthcare |
I also had the opportunity this week to tour Total Medical Supply in Texarkana, a local business that plays a vital role in supplying medical equipment and supplies to healthcare providers and patients across our region.
During the visit, I met with their leadership and the team to learn more about their operations, the challenges they face with the medical supply chain, and how they're going beyond just serving our community's healthcare needs. Every fiber of their culture is about giving back to the community, their employees, and patients. It's always energizing to see firsthand the hard work and dedication that goes into keeping our local healthcare system running, especially right here in East Texas. |
Grateful for Jefferson Police Department’s Service |
This week, I stopped by the Jefferson Police Department to deliver some cookies and say “thank you” to the men and women who serve and protect our community every day.
Our officers put on the uniform knowing the risks that come with it, and they do it anyway—because they care about this community and the people in it. Whether it's responding to a call in the middle of the night or just being a steady, familiar presence around town, the Jefferson PD shows up for us time and again.
I'm grateful for their service and sacrifice, and I'll keep looking for ways—big and small—to show them my appreciation. Thank you, Chief Perez, Constable Jeff Greer, and members of the Jefferson PD for keeping our communities safe. |
Honoring 50 Years of Hard Work |
This week, after I provided an August legislative update to the news team, I enjoyed presenting John Adams, chief meteorologist at KETK/FOX 51, with a framed Congressional Record honoring his 50 years in broadcast meteorology.
Born and raised in Henderson, John studied at the U.S. Air Force Academy, Sam Houston State, and Texas A&M, earning his meteorology degree in 1977. He went on to deliver forecasts across Texas TV and radio for 50 years—through calm mornings and severe storms alike.
Today, John is back home, serving the very community that raised him. It was a privilege to personally congratulate John on this incredible milestone and thank him for five decades dedicated to keeping our community informed and safe.

On August 7, 1789, the U.S. Department of War was established by Congress. The department operated for 158 years until splitting into the Department of the Army and Department of the Air Force in 1947, later merging into the Department of Defense in 1949. President Donald Trump later signed an executive order on September 5, 2025, restoring "Department of War" as a secondary title. |
