Friends,
During last week’s District work period in East Texas, I had several outstanding opportunities to visit with our dedicated educators—public and private—and talented young students at schools across the First Congressional District.
First, I had the honor of speaking with Marshall Christian Academy at their chapel service. The students asked about my path to Congress and the values that should drive each of us to serve our great nation. I encouraged them to dream big, work hard, and never lose sight of their potential to make a positive impact on their communities and our country by serving God and serving others. I also reminded them to keep their God-ordained callings in priority order—faith, family, and then vocation. Congratulations to the Marshall Christian Academy Guardians for winning both the Boys and Girls 2024 TCAL State Basketball Championship last weekend.
Next, I met with the students at White Oak ISD and met Superintendent Dr. William Paul. The students’ enthusiasm and eagerness to learn was truly inspiring. During our conversation, I emphasized the importance of making excellent choices if they wanted to be people of excellence. And, I challenged them to be excellent in four important areas: academically, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. And, I reminded them, that their present circumstances do not dictate their future outcomes. It’s all about trajectory, which will be determined by their decisions. So, let’s encourage them to make excellent choices! Thanks to Dr. Paul for his vision, leadership, and dedication to the students. It’s extraordinary, and I am confident that under his guidance, White Oak ISD will continue to thrive. Go Roughnecks!
My last stop was with students at Pine Tree ISD and Superintendent Steve Clugston. The students were engaged, thoughtful, and full of great questions. The prepared questions came from fifth graders all the way up to Seniors, and no one went easy on their Congressman! It’s clear there are lots of potential leaders in Pine Tree (and each of the schools I visited) thanks to the commitment of Superintendent Clugston, the Board, and the incredible teachers and staff. Our East Texas teachers work tirelessly to ensure our kids are receiving a quality education and are being challenged to make solid choices. Thank you, teachers! As our young minds seek to find their identity, purpose, belonging, and unconditional love in this life, we know you play an important part.
On each of these visits, I stressed the importance of finding and following their callings in life. I believe that each one of these students was created for a special purpose in this life, and each has inestimable potential for excellence. Finding one’s calling is not just about personal fulfillment. It’s about selflessness and making a positive impact in the lives of those around us. Our local educators and teachers are vital to helping these students discover their purpose. Thank you for answering your calling, honing your skills, and using your talents for the betterment of our communities and for the service of others.
I had a fantastic time visiting these schools and speaking to the students. It was heartening to witness their eagerness to explore their potential and contribute meaningfully to society.
