Dear Friends,
While in the District this week, we hosted Arkansas Congressman French Hill for multiple roundtables. Together, we met with constituents and local business leaders to discuss banking, financial markets, economic development, inflation, monetary policy, regulatory overreach, and other issues facing the U.S. economy. Congressman Hill, who represents Arkansas' 2nd Congressional District, serves as Vice-Chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Digital Assets, Financial Technology, and Inclusion, and a member of the Subcommittee on Capital Markets.

The First District of Texas deeply appreciates Congressman Hill for visiting our community, and those who joined these roundtables. It was a valuable opportunity to answer questions and receive feedback from East Texans on what we can do in Washington, D.C. to ensure the banking and investment community is freed from burdensome regulations and to allow our American economy to thrive. We were also able to showcase the important work being done out of our District through the statewide Financial Crimes Investigation Center, which operates under the direction of the Smith County District Attorney, Jacob Putman, and is a leading nationwide financial crimes unit.
Thank you, Congressman Hill, for visiting the First District, and a big thank you to local residents for showing their classic East Texas hospitality.

Last week, I had the special opportunity to speak at the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Smith County Courthouse in Tyler. The construction of the new courthouse is the result of a twenty-five-year community discussion and an intensive three-year planning process leading up to the 2022 decision by Smith County residents to move forward with construction. The new courthouse will replace a 1950s courthouse that was originally built for just two trial courtrooms, and—once complete—will house all eight active trial courts currently in Smith County (with room to add courtrooms when necessary). The focus of the replacement courthouse design was on the security and safety of those participating in the justice process, as well as meeting the logistical and growth needs of the County’s courts.

Engineers, contractors, and community members came together to celebrate the event, recognizing both the historical significance of the location and the need to move forward. Thanks to County Judge Neal Franklin for the kind invitation to participate in this dedication. Earlier this week, my staff and I spent the day in both Pittsburg and Mount Pleasant. In Pittsburg, we were given a tour of Pittsburg Steel by Wes Baker, Travis Nolen, and other members of their team. Pittsburg Steel employs around 120 people and primarily serves clients in the trailer manufacturing industry in the Pittsburg area. They also cater to customers outside of that industry, including other service centers and manufacturers in the mobile home sector. During their busy season, they ship an average of 7,000 tons per month, which amounts to 15 truckloads per day.
I appreciated the team hosting me for a tour of their facilities and a candid discussion about the challenges they face in today’s economy. We also spoke about the harmful impact on small businesses if President Trump’s Tax Cuts and Jobs Act provisions expire next year without Congressional action. These conversations across the First District are invaluable to me as I fight for the small business community in Washington.

Afterwards, we headed over to Local Bounti to tour their six-acre facility in Mount Pleasant, which will leverage Local Bounti’s proprietary Stack & Flow Technology to grow and sell its indoor grown line of packaged leafy greens. Varieties include spring mix, butter lettuce, romaine crisp, green leaf, and additional blends.
|
This facility was designed to provide additional capacity to meet existing demand from Local Bounti’s direct relationships with blue-chip retailers and distributors throughout the region. I enjoyed learning about the innovative growing process, where our guides demonstrated their proprietary Stack and Flow Technology, leading into the main greenhouse growing area. We wrapped up our time in Mount Pleasant with an Economic Development, Workforce, and Education roundtable discussion hosted at the Northeast Texas Community College campus with city, county, and regional economic development leaders from Titus, Morris, Franklin, and Camp Counties. Thanks to all who participated!

We discussed the incredible investments from our local leaders to grow our communities as well as the critical pieces of legislation that will directly impact them, such as the A Stronger Workforce for America Act and the Bipartisan Workforce Pell Act. As the only Texan on the Committee on Education and the Workforce, I am proud to support both pieces of legislation so that our communities have the resources to upskill and expand their current workforces.

It is always good to have lunch at one of TX-01’s very own Herschel’s Restaurants! I caught up with the owner, Richard Witherspoon, over hamburgers this past week. Special thanks to Bill Dixon, Director of Operations, for the great service.

During the War of 1812, Washington, D.C., was invaded by British forces that burned the Capitol, the White House and most other public buildings along with a number of private homes. The burning was in retaliation for the earlier American burning of York (Toronto).
