Dear East Texas,

Happy Fourth of July! Today we honor America’s 250th anniversary. It was the day when the desperation for liberty was met with the determination of revolutionaries and the desire for freedom was met with a decision to sacrifice.

The Founding Fathers didn’t just declare independence—they articulated a vision of government grounded in the belief that human dignity is a gift from God, not granted from government.

But here’s what’s often forgotten: they knew this would only endure through sacrifice and commitment from every generation that followed. Through trials, divisions, and countless challenges, Americans have repeatedly chosen to recommit themselves to the principles that bind us together—faith, freedom, and service.

The greatest chapters of the American story aren’t behind us. They’re still to come—written by dedicated Americans like you.

This Fourth of July, let’s reflect on the flag of the United States of America. Bravery, purity, and perseverance all wrapped up in the red, white, and blue. Let it fill your heart with the patriotism of Patrick Henry, the passion of Sam Adams, and the persistence and purpose of George Washington.

One Year of Delivering for Working Families

One year ago, Congress passed the One, Big, Beautiful Bill--historic legislation I was proud to help author as a member of the House Ways and Means Committee. Since President Trump signed the bill on July 4, 2025, families, workers, seniors, and small businesses across East Texas have seen real, tangible relief in their paychecks and on their tax returns.

This law promotes safety, strength, and savings:

  • Safety — This law secures our border and strengthens public safety in communities across East Texas, giving law enforcement the resources they need and families the peace of mind they deserve.
  • Strength — It reverses years of reckless spending under the Biden Administration, restoring fiscal discipline and rebuilding America's economic and energy strength.
  • Savings — It delivers the largest tax relief in a generation, putting more money back into the pockets of East Texas families, workers, seniors, and small businesses.

I’ll keep fighting to make sure you have greater liberty from the work Congressional Republicans are doing.

Celebrating Freedom

I was honored to speak at the Green Acres Baptist Church Celebrate Freedom event. I joined thousands of our neighbors to celebrate our faith and freedom together.

Events like this remind me why I am grateful to be an American. Grateful to enjoy the God-given rights of liberty; grateful for the opportunity to live out the American Dream and to fulfill the Great Commandment; grateful for the freedom; the privilege, and the responsibility to stand at attention with my hand over my heart, pledge allegiance to our flag, and feel the goose bumps of patriotism on my skin and deep within my soul. Grateful for followers of Christ who know that virtue and morality and righteousness are inseparable from the preservation of our Republic and the enjoyment of our liberty.

House Votes to Protect Taxpayer Dollars and Children Online

This week, two key pieces of legislation passed the House. One clears a path to recover nearly $1 billion in stranded pandemic unemployment funds from banks, while the other delivers strong online safety protections for children across America.

H.R. 8873 – Recover COVID Unemployment Fraud in Banks Act

This bill addresses the massive scale of fraud in COVID-19 pandemic unemployment programs by establishing a coordinated federal effort to claw back stolen funds and extending the window to prosecute offenders. It creates a National Recovery Coordinator and an interagency Task Force to assist states in identifying and recovering improper payments currently sitting in financial institutions, particularly on prepaid debit cards.

H.R.7757 – Kids Internet and Digital Safety Act

This bill would empower parents by requiring social media platforms to provide readily accessible parental controls, protects kids’ privacy by banning targeted advertising to children and teens, prohibits market research on children, and mandates age verification to access sexually explicit materials. This bill marks the most comprehensive piece of legislation that protects our children by strengthening parents’ rights and holds tech companies accountable.

Fourth of July in Washington, D.C.

It was an honor to welcome a wonderful group of East Texans who made the journey to Washington, D.C., to commemorate America 250.

During their visit, I had the pleasure of leading a tour of the Capitol, where we explored the hallowed halls and chambers that have shaped American democracy for nearly two and a half centuries. Always great to have the East Texas spirit in Washington. Grateful to ring in the momentous occasion with our neighbors from across Texas’ First District.

JeffersonAdams

On July 4, 1826, 50 years to the day after the Declaration of Independence was adopted, former presidents John Adams and Thomas Jefferson both died. Thomas Jefferson passed away at his Monticello estate in Virginia at 12:50 p.m. at age 83 . Just a few hours later, at the age of 90, John Adams died at his home in Quincy, Massachusetts. Unaware that Jefferson had already passed away earlier that day, Adams's famous final words were, "Thomas Jefferson still survives"
