Dear East Texas, We are in the final day of the Biden Administration, and Washington, D.C., is buzzing with excitement. As we show Joe Biden and Kamala Harris the door, we welcome President Donald Trump and Vice President-elect J.D. Vance to the White House for the next four years of an America First Administration. Whether you are traveling out to D.C. for this historic occasion, viewing from home, or attending a local watch party—I can assure you I am just as excited as you are to have President Trump back in the Oval Office. It was an honor to welcome many of you to Washington, D.C., on Friday during my office’s Inauguration Open House.

Ahead of Monday’s inaugural ceremony, House Republicans have been hard at work to deliver on the mandate given to us by the American people by passing legislation to secure our borders, protect women and girls in sports, combat crime by illegal immigrants, and honor our American flag.

Ways and Means Hits the Ground Running to Make the Trump Tax Cuts Permanent
|
Last week, Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith (R-MO-08) gaveled in our first Committee hearing of the 119th Congress. This hearing focused on the significance of making permanent the Trump Tax Cuts for America’s working families and small businesses. During the hearing, I asked witnesses about the negative impacts of allowing the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) to expire at the end of 2025, specifically highlighting the harmful consequences this would have for the First District of Texas. In our district, a family of four earning the district’s median yearly income of $61,182 would see a $1,142 tax increase should the Trump Tax Cuts expire at the end of the year. For a family of four, this money is worth about six weeks of groceries in East Texas. It is also enough money to cover about 27 full tanks of gas – even in a pickup truck. Groceries and gas are important to every American and every East Texan that I represent. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act cannot be allowed to expire. We must continue its provisions to allow families to thrive and businesses to grow.

Earlier last week, I reintroduced my Border Security Investment Act to establish a dual-fund system that finances border security through a 37% remittance fee on money transfers to countries associated with high levels of illegal immigration. Half of the fees collected will reimburse border states for enforcement costs, while the other half will fund federal border security projects, including physical barriers. The crisis at our southern border demands swift action. Our nation’s security and sovereignty depend on deterring illegal immigration and addressing an issue most Americans want resolved. This bill eases the financial burden on border states without additional federal taxes, using collected fees to strengthen security infrastructure. By discouraging remittance transfers to these countries, this legislation creates a deterrent effect and ensures those benefiting from U.S. resources contribute to securing our borders. Key provisions of the Border Security Investment Act include: - Establishing a Border Security State Reimbursement Trust Fund to cover state enforcement costs.
- Creating a Border Security Trust Fund to support federal security projects, including barrier construction.
- Amending the Electronic Fund Transfer Act to impose a 37% fee on remittances to the five countries with the highest numbers of illegal immigrants entering the U.S.
- Allocating remittance fees equally between state reimbursements and federal security initiatives.
- Allowing unused funds to be invested in U.S.-guaranteed interest-bearing obligations.
This bill delivers a decisive and sustainable solution to secure our borders and protect our sovereignty.

On Tuesday, I proudly voted for the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act to ensure fairness and safety for women and girls in athletics. As a father of two daughters, I want them to compete in an environment that supports their growth—not one that puts them at risk or undermines reality. This bill protects female athletes by requiring schools receiving federal funding to recognize sex based on biology at birth, ensuring only biological women compete in women’s sports.
Thank you, Congressman Greg Steube (R-FL-17), for leading on this critical issue. It’s time to stand for truth, safety, and fairness in sports.

I joined Congresswoman Monica De La Cruz’s (R-TX-15), Honor Inauguration Day Act to ensure American flags fly at their highest peak on Presidential Inauguration Day. Inauguration Day should be a time for celebration and excitement as we look ahead to our new Administration. I’m proud to cosponsor Congresswoman De La Cruz’s legislation to ensure our nation’s flag is always fully raised on Inauguration Day, in celebration of the will of the American people in electing a President to lead the country forward for the next four years. This legislation still allows for the American flag to be lowered ceremonially at the President’s discretion on any day before or after Presidential Inauguration Day. On Thursday, the House of Representatives passed Congresswoman Nancy Mace’s (R-SC) H.R. 30: Preventing Violence Against Women by Illegal Aliens Act. This bill aims to enhance public safety by addressing gaps in immigration law that allow criminal aliens to remain in the U.S. The bill strengthens grounds for inadmissibility and removability by barring aliens convicted of or admitting to sex offenses from entering or staying in the country. It also expands the definition of sex offenses under the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act to include more specific offenses.
The bill also addresses domestic violence crimes by closing immigration law loopholes, creating grounds for inadmissibility for offenses like stalking, child abuse, and violating protection orders. This ensures offenders cannot evade removal. H.R. 30 prioritizes the removal of criminal aliens, deterring future offenses and strengthening public safety.
