Dear East Texas, With President Trump back in office, we the people once again have a strong voice to lead our nation. Monday, January 20th, 2025, will be remembered by future generations as the day our country emerged from darkness into the golden light of a renewed era.

It was an honor to stand in the Capitol Rotunda on behalf of the First Congressional District of Texas to witness President Trump and Vice President JD Vance take the oath of office. While the weather prevented the Inauguration ceremony from taking place outdoors, the Capitol Rotunda—decorated with murals, statues of explorers, American heroes, and former presidents—proved to be a fitting and symbolic setting to usher in this new Administration. Whether you were in Washington, D.C., watching from home, or following along from elsewhere, I hope you share the same sense of optimism and boldness I feel for our country. This is a new day for America, and President Trump has reignited hope and courage in every American, inspiring us to pursue our callings and contribute to the advancement of our country.

President Trump: Promises Made, Promises Kept
|
Soon after taking the Oath of Office, President Trump wasted no time getting to work, signing executive orders to put our country back on track. Within hours of assuming office, he had already accomplished the following: - 42 Executive Orders, Memoranda, and Proclamations
- 115 Personnel Actions
- More than 200 Executive Actions
- 60 Minutes of Press Q&A (a rare occurrence during the previous Administration)
- 6 Speeches
These early actions reflect President Trump’s decisive leadership in addressing critical national issues. Key highlights include: - Securing Our Borders: Strengthening border security with physical barriers, increased enforcement, and the resumption of Migrant Protection Protocols.
- Declaring a National Emergency: Mobilizing military resources to combat threats at the southern border, including cartels and human trafficking.
- Restoring Free Speech: Reaffirming First Amendment rights and ending federal censorship on online platforms.
- Energy Independence: Promoting domestic energy production to reduce reliance on foreign sources.
- Ending Radical DEI Programs: Eliminating wasteful diversity policies in federal agencies to ensure fair treatment.
- Withdrawal from WHO: Reasserting U.S. sovereignty by providing notice of the United States intent to exit the World Health Organization.
- Return to In-Person Work: Requiring federal employees to resume in-office duties to enhance efficiency.
These actions by President Trump underscore a strong commitment to restoring America's strength, security, and prosperity. As a member of the Ways and Means Committee, I was pleased to see President Trump sign an executive order (EO) to reject the Biden Administration's global tax agreement with the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), which unfairly taxed American workers and businesses and gave China an advantage. This EO is integral to defending U.S. tax sovereignty, and it removed Biden's attempts to surrender Congress’s tax authority. The EO directs the U.S. Treasury to investigate tax violations by other countries and prepare retaliatory measures to protect the U.S. economy. I was also an original cosponsor of Chairman Jason Smith’s (R-MO-08) Defending American Jobs and Investment Act which would support these efforts and prevent future attacks on American businesses.

This week, House Republicans were hard at work to deliver on the mandate provided to us by the American people in November. On Wednesday, we passed the final version of the Laken Riley Act, which included additional provisions added by the Senate to further strengthen immigration enforcement and border security. The Laken Riley Act now heads to President Donald Trump to be his first bill signed into law as the 47th President. The Laken Riley Act was named after Laken Hope Riley, a 22-year-old nursing student who was brutally murdered by an illegal alien who was still in the U.S. even after he had been cited for theft. I look forward to President Trump swiftly signing this important legislation into law and sending a resounding message to the world that this new Administration and the Republican Congress will not be deterred in our mission to crack down on illegal immigration, secure the border, and protect our citizens.
In addition, House Republicans this week passed the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, legislation I cosponsored to protect babies who are born alive after failed abortions and ensure they receive the same medical assistance as any newborn. This bill imposes penalties on health care practitioners who fail to provide care or intentionally attempt to kill born alive babies as well as provides a right of action for mothers of children who survive an abortion to ensure abortion providers are held accountable. House Republicans remain steadfast in the fight to protect and preserve the gift of life. I hope this legislation is quickly passed by the Senate and sent to President Trump to be signed into law.

Last Saturday, I had the pleasure of discussing pro-small business and family tax policy with former Ways and Means Chairman Kevin Brady and Congresswoman Beth Van Duyne (R-TX-24) at the Texas Business Conference, hosted by the Texas State Society.
|
We are working together to renew President Trump’s successful tax cuts and protect the American people from the burden of crippling tax hikes if Trump’s Tax Cuts are not extended. Our goal is to ensure that hardworking families and businesses continue to thrive without the threat of excessive tax increases and government burdens.

This week, my staff and I had the pleasure of welcoming the Texas High School Band from Texarkana to our nation’s Capitol building. The band had been invited to perform in the prestigious Presidential inauguration parade, proudly representing East Texas. Unfortunately, due to the inclement weather, the parade was canceled when the inauguration was moved inside.
|
Despite this disappointment, the students made the most of their visit. We had the opportunity to lead them on a tour of the Capitol building, sharing the rich history and significance of this iconic building.
If you are visiting Washington, D.C., please reach out to my office by phone at (202) 225-3035 or request a tour on our website by clicking HERE. My staff would be happy to help you with your tour requests around D.C.!

On January 22nd, 1973, former President Lyndon Baines Johnson died in Johnson City, Texas, at the age of 64. After leaving the White House in 1968, L.B.J. returned to his beloved home state, Texas, with his wife, Lady Bird Johnson, and immersed himself in the activity dearest to him: ranching.
