Dear Friends,
It’s been another busy week here in Washington, D.C. House Republicans continue to work on behalf of the American people as we prepare to transition into the 119th Congress, and despite everything going on as the year draws to a close, I remain focused on what we can achieve between now and January 2, 2025, when the 118th Congress officially ends and the 119th Congress begins. There are great things ahead for the American people as President Trump returns to office and Republicans take control of the Senate and continue to lead the House. With that in mind, on Wednesday night, I hosted my first telephone townhall since the November elections. It was a great opportunity to hear directly from the people of the First District about the issues that matter most to them. Thank you to folks who joined this engaging conversation and shared their opinions and priorities for the end of the year and 2025. I can tell you, the excitement for the incoming Trump Administration can be felt in Washington D.C., East Texas, and all throughout our great country. I look forward to keeping you updated as we work to deliver the results the American people deserve.

Passing Legislation to Support Our Nation’s Veterans
|
This week, the House passed legislation introduced by Congressman Juan Ciscomani (R-AZ-06), H.R. 8371, the Senator Elizabeth Dole 21st Century Veterans Healthcare and Benefits Improvement Act. This bill works to ensure that our nation’s veterans get access to the healthcare, benefits, and education that they earned while defending our country. The reforms I supported include modernizing the Department of Veterans Affairs’ (VA) healthcare and benefits systems to expand access to home and community-based services, creating better support for veterans transitioning to civilian life through the Veterans Technology Education Courses (VET-TEC) program, providing authorities to the VA Secretary to award grants that support veterans and their family caregivers’ access to mental health treatments and counseling, and improving efficiency while reducing costs within the VA. By focusing on healthcare, education, and homelessness, this legislation seeks to ensure veterans receive timely and effective support while making the VA more efficient and accessible. These cost-saving measures provide a financially responsible approach to ensure that veterans have access to quality healthcare. I am pleased to share that the House passed this legislation by a vote of 389 to 9.
As always, if you are having issues with the VA, please reach out to my office for assistance by calling (903) 561-6349 or visiting my website.

This month, in recognition of National Adoption Awareness Month, I introduced a resolution honoring the selfless acts of adoption, fostering, and unconditional love by an incredible community here in East Texas – Bishop W.C. Martin, First Lady Donna Martin, and the Bennett Chapel Missionary Baptist Church of Possum Trot, Texas. These amazing individuals expressed true love and compassion toward the children in their community, and my resolution recognizes them and the other families across America who have fostered, adopted, and worked to better the lives of vulnerable children in the foster care system. On behalf of the 118th Congress, I wanted to highlight National Adoption Awareness Month and honor the families of the Bennett Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Possum Trot, Texas, who, under the leadership of Bishop and First Lady Martin, came to the rescue of 77 of these children by providing safe and caring homes through their determination, prayer, and unconditional love. The story of Possum Trot is a beautiful story about the strength of community and the endurance of spirit by Bishop and First Lady Martin.

On Monday, I had the privilege of speaking to students at Patrick Henry College, a conservative Christian college located in Purcellville, Virginia, during their morning chapel service. It was an honor to share my testimony with these impressive young students. We had a meaningful conversation about how we must keep faith at the center of our lives and allow it to shape us into godly leaders. Thank you to Heather Stoner, a former Tyler resident and current staff member at Patrick Henry College, for inviting me to speak. It was truly an honor, and I appreciate these students for their engaging questions and thoughtful conversation.

On November 19, 1863, at the dedication of a military cemetery at Gettysburg, President Abraham Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address. In under 275 words, Lincoln powerfully reminded the public of the Union's purpose in the Civil War. Initially, the speech received mixed reactions, mostly divided by partisanship, but it has since become one of the most eloquent expressions of democratic ideals in history.
