Friends,
Every day across the country, brave officers suit up, not knowing what may be in store for them. They serve with integrity, prepared for whatever may come their way. Last week was National Police Week, a time to honor the dedication and sacrifice of our law enforcement officers who selflessly protect and serve our communities. Their unwavering determination to uphold the law and safeguard our neighborhoods is nothing short of heroic, and it is important for us to recognize and appreciate their invaluable contributions. As we reflect on their commitment to public service, I am honored to stand in solidarity with our brave men and women in blue and reaffirm my support.
On Monday, I joined the Texarkana Police Department to discuss the Department’s incredible work to ensure our community's safety and see a demonstration from the K9 team. Their commitment to excellence is evident in every facet of their operation. It was truly inspiring to see their professionalism and dedication in action. Thank you for letting me stop by!

It was also a privilege to have Captain Craig Halbrooks and Lieutenant Nikki Keegan of the Smith County Sheriff’s Office in Washington, DC. Captain Halbrooks and Lieutenant Keegan – along with Craig’s wife Kristina - accompanied Gloria and Hunter Bustos, the wife and son of fallen Smith County Sheriff Deputy Lorenzo Bustos to honor and celebrate law enforcement officers across the country. During their visit, I had the opportunity to give them a tour of the Capitol and accompany Deputy Bustos’ son onto the House Floor during votes. On Wednesday, at the Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony for Fallen Officers, we honored the life of Deputy Lorenzo Bustos and his service to East Texas.

House Republicans honored America’s law enforcement heroes by bringing to the floor a series of bills that highlighted our support for law enforcement across the country. I was proud to extend my support by voting on these initiatives for those who serve their communities. Some of these bills include: - S. 546 - Recruit and Retain Act, which expands eligibility for the U.S. Department of Justice’s Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) grant program to include recruitment and retention efforts.
- H.R. 7581 – Improving Law Enforcement Officer Safety and Wellness Through Data Act of 2024, which requires the Attorney General to develop reports on violent attacks on law enforcement officers, the efficacy of current data collection, and the efficacy of programs intended to provide protective equipment to law enforcement officers.
- H.R. 7343 – Detain and Deport Illegal Aliens Who Assault Cops Act, which ensures that the assault of a law enforcement officer is grounds for detention and deportation.
To all the law enforcement officers across East Texas and beyond, I extend my deepest gratitude for your service and sacrifice. Thank you for keeping East Texans safe!

On Monday, I had the privilege of visiting the Wadley Regional Medical Center in Texarkana, TX. It was great to meet with the team at the Center and discuss their efforts to cater to the diverse medical needs of Texarkana and the surrounding communities. Their commitment to providing healthcare services and delivering life-saving care to the First District is truly commendable. Thank you for your invaluable contributions!

On Wednesday, I questioned Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, Xavier Becerra, at a Committee on Education and the Workforce hearing on the importance of having a national strategy to address child abuse across the country. The bipartisan Jenna Quinn Law of 2024 not only extends training initiatives but also raises the likelihood of sexual abuse being reported, and ultimately stopped. I introduced the Jenna Quinn Law of 2024, along with Congressman Michael McCaul (TX-10) and Congresswoman Susan Wild (PA-07) to authorize the Department of Health and Human Services to allow existing federal grants to be used for increasing evidence-based or informed training on sexual abuse prevention education and reporting to teachers, school employees, students, caregivers, and other adults who work with children.

I also had several opportunities to give night tours of the U.S. Capitol to a number of East Texans. On Tuesday night, Wade Gent and the Caldwell family were in DC, and we had a great time discussing the history that lies within the Capitol building. On Thursday, I met with the Henderson High School Band while they were in Washington and gave them an evening tour of our nation’s Capitol as well. Thanks to all who stopped by to say hello in my DC office! Having neighbors from the First District visit is always an honor.
