Friends,
We’re familiar with summer storms in East Texas, but due to gaps in weather monitoring systems in rural areas, residents, often times, do not have adequate time to prepare in the event of an emergency.
My new legislation, the Rural Weather Monitoring Systems Act will require a study to review current weather monitoring systems in rural areas. While similar studies have been performed in the past, the former legislation stopped short of effecting material change. This new legislation’s goal is to expedite the implementation of solutions in areas where Next Generation Weather Radar (NEXRAD) coverage must currently be supplemented. The bill will also identify regulatory barriers, funding limitations, and other obstacles standing in the way of the development and implementation of next-generation weather monitoring systems.
When it comes to inclement weather, every second counts. This legislation is the first step in improving weather monitoring systems, saving lives in rural America.

Supporting our Men and Women in Uniform
|
Last week, I voted in support of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2024 – referred to as the “one of the most pro-life, pro-family NDAAs on record.” This legislation will increase servicemember pay by 5.2%, allocate $70 million in funding for the Red River Army Depot, and eliminate policies inconsistent with East Texas values that undermine our military’s readiness.
The NDAA authorizes full funding for national defense activities while cutting unnecessary costs and improving efficiency. Big policy wins include prohibiting taxpayer funding for teaching Critical Race Theory in the military, providing a pathway to reinstate servicemembers who were discharged for refusing to take the COVID-19 vaccine, preventing a Military “Green New Deal,” and the 5.2% pay increase for servicemembers – the largest raise in 20 years.
Importantly, this legislation will encourage innovative technology, provide for the common defense, and secure our nation.

Speaking with East Texas Veterans
|
It is humbling to be given the opportunity to represent those who have served our nation, and I am committed to ensuring that Congress supports our servicemembers and works to increase our military readiness.
Thank you to the American Legion of Lindale for allowing me to speak with you directly about my work in Congress to advocate on behalf of our veterans. It was a great crowd and energetic atmosphere. I appreciate you all!

Fighting for American Businesses
|
During last week’s House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing, I questioned John Kerry about the Biden Administration’s double standard – specifically, holding the Chinese Communist Party to a different standard than the United States when it comes to environmental policies.
We need to urge the Administration to stand up to China, holding Chinese businesses to the same level of accountability as domestic enterprises. In Congress, I am fighting to guarantee a level playing field, supporting American-owned businesses.
My line of questioning was recently featured on Fox News’ The Faulkner Focus – available by clicking HERE or on the video below.

Welcoming East Texans to Washington, D.C.
|
It is always a pleasure welcoming East Texans to our nation’s capital.
I recently enjoyed seeing Pastor Pan Yongguang, who led the Mayflower Church on their journey to religious freedom in East Texas, in Washington, D.C. last week for a press conference advocating for religious freedom on a global scale alongside Rep. Chris Smith of New Jersey, Bob Fu of ChinaAid, and Deana Brown of Freedom Seekers International.

Thank you to those who joined me, and the Texas Delegation, at the Texas Tea Reception last week! I enjoy having the opportunity to speak directly with East Texans and look forward to the next event.
|
For young East Texans looking to jump in the fray, internship opportunities in Washington, D.C. are available! This week, I caught up with Robert, a Gilmer native, who is currently interning with the State Department. Way to go!
