Dear East Texas,  Merry Christmas! Christmas is a season of joy, community, and reflection. This holiday season I invite you to reflect on the true reason for the season. The birth of Jesus Christ brings hope, peace, and eternal life. May His love fill your heart with and home with purpose as we remember his ultimate sacrifice. In December, we all find ways to serve one another, connect with neighbors and friends, and focus on compassion and community. I hope we all find ways to bring the spirit and joy of the season beyond December.

A Christmas Tradition

I know that many of you have special Christmas traditions that are meaningful to your family. But, please allow me to share one of my favorite childhood traditions at Christmas. As far back as I can remember as a child, one of my favorite Christmas traditions was gathering around the radio and listening to Paul Harvey’s iconic Christmas story entitled “The Man and the Birds.” Paul Harvey’s daily lunchtime news program and end-of-the-day’s “rest of the story” were daily staples throughout the year, but Christmas Day was always a little extra special. His distinct and calming voice always brought comfort and a sense of togetherness, but on Christmas Day, his story of The Man and The Birds went further to help elucidate The Truth that sometimes seems so complicated, but in reality is so simple. I’ve replayed it for my kids many times over the years, including this week with my two littlest.

I hope that you will take just a few minutes to enjoy some old-fashioned Paul Harvey and reflect on the meaning of his short story. Click HERE to watch Paul Harvey: A Christmas Story – The Man and the Birds.
