Friends,
On Monday, I joined several of my colleagues on a visit to Eagle Pass, Texas, to witness firsthand the gravity of the crisis that our nation is facing at our southern border. This experience has furthered my belief that we must take swift and decisive action to address this pressing issue. As Congress considers legislation to continue government funding in the coming weeks, I urge my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to fight for increased border security in any agreement that we reach. Our nation’s security – and our sovereignty – depends on it.
During my time at the border, I heard directly from Homeland Security Investigators, Border Patrol Agents, local law enforcement officials, members of the national guard, and officers from the Texas Department of Public Safety. These dedicated men and women described what a dire situation we are facing. Since President Biden took office, we have witnessed over six million illegal crossings at our southern border – with over 232,000 crossings just during the month of August. In fiscal year 2023, over 25,000 pounds of deadly fentanyl have been seized and 151 individuals listed on the terrorist watchlist were stopped crossing the border.
While the hard work and dedication of the men and women working to secure our border is commendable, the sheer number of individuals attempting to enter our country illegally is straining their resources and presenting them with an almost impossible challenge.

A nation without secure borders is not truly sovereign. Across the First District, border security has been the number one issue that you have discussed with me. We cannot allow the Biden Administration to turn a blind eye to this crisis that is endangering communities across the country every day, and we have a responsibility to address this crisis with urgency and unwavering resolve.
Thursday night, we took a step toward border security. House Republicans passed the Department of Homeland Security Appropriations Act, which includes funding for the expedited construction of physical barriers and increased personnel along the border, provides funding for the removal of illegal aliens, and prohibits the dismantling of existing border barriers. This strong legislation funds and builds upon the historic Secure the Border Act, which the House passed in May of this year. By passing legislation, such as this, we are forcing the Senate and the White House to acknowledge the crisis at the border, and we are bringing them one step closer to actually acting to address it.
As your elected Member of Congress, it is of my utmost priority to address your concerns and work toward securing our border.

Thanks to all who joined me for my ninth Tele-Townhall! And, a big thank you to our special guests, Congressman Chip Roy and Kurt Couchman. With the range of issues Congress is addressing this week, it was the perfect opportunity for you to voice your opinion and hear about what’s happening behind the scenes in Washington, D.C. We focused our discussion on the current appropriations debate in Congress and how it relates to the fight for securing our border. Additionally, we discussed long-term solutions, such as my Principles Based Balanced Budget Amendment, to our budget and spending problems. As always, it was a pleasure to speak directly with you, hear your concerns, and answer your questions.

This week, I had the privilege of meeting with the Texas Business Leadership Council, a trailblazing organization representing Texas’ business community. We discussed ways to boost the long-term competitiveness of Texas businesses, and specifically, we discussed workforce and labor issues, immigration reforms, reducing tax burdens on businesses, and economic development. Thank you to the Texas Business Leadership Council for your dedication to creating an environment that fosters development, job creation, and prosperity for all Texans.

This week in the Education and the Workforce Committee, I spoke at the Higher Education and Workforce Development Subcommittee hearing on Affirmative Action. I questioned the validity of affirmative action in our military academies such as West Point and the importance of education in lifting students out of poverty.
