Moran Statement on Debris Falling from Route 50 Bridge

Washington, D.C., March 5th – Congressman Jim Moran, Northern Virginia Democrat, released the following statement regarding a chunk of concrete and steel debris that fell from a Glebe Rd. bridge and landed on Route 50 in Arlington, Virginia.

“This incident underscores the need to strengthen our crumbling physical infrastructure; the roads, bridges and highways that link our people and economies in the Washington Metropolitan region. The Recovery Package passed by Congress was a down payment on that effort, providing over $600 million for transportation improvements in the Commonwealth.”

“But until the General Assembly can find agreement on a long term transportation funding plan, federal efforts will be insufficient to meet the state’s ongoing needs.”

All three lanes of westbound U.S. 50 have reopened after concrete debris fell onto U.S. Route 50 from the Glebe Road overpass this morning. Two left lanes of inbound U.S. 50 remain closed. VDOT is on the scene and determined that the chunks of concrete were coming from the sidewalk on the overpass, not the structure of the bridge itself, according to a NewsChannel 8 report.
