The House of Representatives has unanimously approved a resolution honoring Earl Lloyd, who was born in Alexandria and was the first African American to play in the National Basketball Association.

"For Alexandrians, he is a hometown hero, someone who represents the values of inclusion, justice and hard work," said Rep. James P. Moran Jr. (D-Va.), who sponsored the resolution. The measure was passed March 5.

Lloyd, whose nickname was Big Cat, was a first-round draft pick by the Washington Capitals in 1950, and he played his first NBA game on Oct. 31 of that year. During nine seasons, he averaged 8.4 points and 6.4 rebounds a game. He went on to serve as head coach for the Detroit Pistons and was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2003.
