CJS Bill Includes Over $10 Million for Northern Virginia |

| Non-Profits, Law Enforcement, and Environmental Efforts Funded | ||

Washington, D.C., June 19th – Congressman Jim Moran, Virginia Democrat, announced the following projects which were included today in the House approved version of the FY ’10 Commerce, Justice, Science Appropriations bill (H.R. 2847). Moran requested the projects as a senior member of the Appropriations Committee. “From protecting the Bay to assisting immigrant women fleeing domestic violence, the projects I supported in this bill have been directed to non-profits, local governments and federal agencies focused on bettering the lives of Northern Virginians,” said Moran. Environment $350,000 for the National Oceanic and Atmosphere Administration (NOAA) to support the Chesapeake Bay Interpretive Buoy System, which deploys high-tech buoys in the Virginia segments of the Chesapeake Bay that will provide real-time data on environmental and weather conditions. $700,000 for the National Oceanic and Atmosphere Administration (NOAA) to continue the Chesapeake Bay’s Oyster Restoration Program which is attempting to restore the Bay’s native oyster population. $300,000 to the Virginia Institute of Marine Science for the Virginia Trawl Survey which supports time series fisheries monitoring data in the Chesapeake Bay that is used by Virginia Marine Resources Commission to evaluate fishery resources in the Bay. Law Enforcement $140,000 for the City of Alexandria to fund the purchase of crime scene investigation equipment that will be used in a new mobile crime scene investigation vehicle. The equipment purchased will include specialized lights, computer equipment, cameras, and evidence collection and analysis equipment. $300,000 for the Virginia Center for Policing Innovation to design and execute training programs for Virginia’s state and local law enforcement officers. $160,000 to the Enough is Enough non-profit for their Virginia Internet Safety 101 Program that informs parents about the dangers of online sex predators through the use web-based applications, a DVD teaching series, radio and print public service announcements, and town hall seminars. $3,000,000 to the Loudon County Sheriff's Office to support the Northern Virginia Regional Gang Taskforce. The taskforce is a comprehensive regional law enforcement program that works to suppress, prevent, and intervene in violent gang activity. Education & Social Services $4,000,000 for the JASON Project which promotes science education in the classroom. The JASON Project involves free online science and mathematics educational curriculum for use by students and teachers across the country. It also provides training for teachers to improve Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) education. $500,000 for the Tahirih Justice Center which provides legal services to immigrant women and girls. The funding will go towards direct legal services and social/medical services for Northern Virginia immigrant women and girls fleeing gender-based violence. $200,000 for the City of Alexandria’s Seaport Foundation for their “Youth Building Green” at-risk youth program that partners with the Alexandria Court Services, Public Schools, and the Seaport Foundation. The program provides math, technology and basic job skills to delinquent youth through hands-on activities like boat-building. $200,000 to the Virginia Mentoring Partnership for their mentoring programs targeting at-risk youth in Northern Virginia. $300,000 for the non-profit Homestretch, which assists victims of homelessness and domestic violence. The funding would provide housing and holistic social services to homeless women and children, at least half of which are victims of domestic violence. --30-- |
