Washington, D.C., July 26th – Congressman Jim Moran, Virginia Democrat, has announced the following projects which were included in the House approved version of the FY ’08 Commerce, Justice, State Appropriations bill (H.R. 3093). Moran is a senior member of the Appropriations Committee.
$100,000 for Emergency Technology for Arlington County. These funds will go towards improving the County’s Fire, Police and Rescues’ internet connectivity with mobile command units in the field in order to provide a coordinated response in the event of an emergency.
$100,000 for Computerized Crime Fighting Technology for the City of Alexandria. This funding would be used to purchase new data-mining software, IxReveal, which allows crime analysts to digitally search through huge volumes of police records quickly and efficiently using key search terms.
$100,000 for the Regional Pawn Database Sharing System (RPDSS) operated by the Washington Metropolitan Council of Governments. The RPDSS gives police departments the ability to cross reference items reported stolen with inventories from local pawn shops located throughout the Washington Metropolitan region. When a match is made, police from the 19 participating law enforcement agencies, including Virginia, the District and Maryland are able to determine the name and address of the individual who sold the stolen good to the pawn shop. The system is web-based, allowing officers convenient access from laptops in their patrol cars.
$100,000 for Arlington County’s Inmate GED Program, which assists current and recently released inmates in obtaining their high school equivalency or GED. Studies have shown that help better educate inmates leads to lower levels of recidivism. Administered by the Arlington County Sheriff’s office, these funds would allow 750 adults in Arlington’s Adult Education Program to access a GED prep program.
$1,000,000 for the Tahirih Justice Center in Falls Church, which assists immigrant women and girls fleeing persecution domestically and in their country of origin. Tahirih is in the process of developing a multi-year strategic campaign to achieve the fulfillment of legislation enacted last year, the International Marriage Broker Regulation Act, which seeks to inform woman as to marital or violent criminal history of prospective husbands pursuing mail order brides. Tahirih would use the funding to increase legal and social services to mail order brides and work with advocates and embassies in other countries to protect these women.
$200,000 for KidsPeace, a national children's charity that provides therapeutic foster care to children facing serious emotional and psychological crisis. This organization is seeking startup costs to open its Northern Virginia location to provide services for the greater Northern Virginia community. |
